The Fairy Dell is a local nature reserve in the grounds of the former Gunnergate Hall, home of leading 19th century Quaker Charles Leatham.
The wooded beck valley is an oasis for nature and wildlife. It is home to grey heron, kingfisher and water voles among other wildlife. The area is popular with dog walkers and bird watchers.
How your donation will help
Without extra cash, only basic council maintenance will take place on this valuable site. The Friends of Fairy Dell group wants to increase the use and enjoyment of the Dell and is seeking to carry out path improvements and general maintenance, create new wildlife habitats, erect interpretation boards and install sympathetic artwork. The group has also expressed an interest in creating a natural play area in the park at the top of the Dell.
Additional volunteers would help the Friends to make the Dell an even more valuable resource for the people of south Middlesbrough. The group meets regularly for general maintenance tasks around the Dell, including, litter picking, vegetation clearance and tree planting. They also organise activities and events through the year to promote Fairy Dell to all age groups.
